Free on Saturday 31 October: the parade leaves Eastern Esplanade at 6pm, reaches the pier by 6.45pm and ends at 7.30pm with fireworks. Route, parking, joining.

The Southend Halloween Parade is on Saturday 31 October 2026, from 6pm, and it is free. It sets off from the Eastern Esplanade car park, runs along Marine Parade past the pier and finishes on Western Esplanade by 7.30pm, when the seafront fireworks go up from a barge just east of the pier (Southend Halloween Parade).

This is the parade’s sixth year and, for the first time, it falls on Halloween night itself (Visit Southend). The council’s events calendar lists it as free, 18:00 to 19:30, on Southend Seafront (Southend-on-Sea City Council).

The route and the timings

The organiser publishes the running order in its FAQs:

The parade’s own home page and the council both give the end time as 7.30pm. Visit Southend, the council’s tourism site, lists 6pm to 7.45pm, which appears to allow for the fireworks. Plan on the parade itself being over by 7.30pm.

Where to stand depends on what you want. The Marine Parade stretch between the car park and the pier sees the parade first, before 6.45pm, so it suits younger children. Anywhere along the front gets the fireworks, and the organiser says they can be seen “from anywhere along the seafront”.

What to expect

The organiser promises street performers, live music and “a carnival of creepy characters”, and Visit Southend adds illuminated displays and a parade of costumed groups. The entries are local: companies decorating floats, dance troupes and groups of friends, all of whom must be lit up because the whole event runs after dark.

There are no food and drink stalls. The organiser points people to the seafront’s own businesses for burgers, fish and chips, hot doughnuts and ice cream.

Leave the dog at home. Dogs are not allowed in the parade, and the organiser advises against bringing them to watch because the front is crowded and noisy and there is a fireworks display at 7.30pm.

It goes ahead in most weather. The organiser says the parade will only be called off in storm or hurricane conditions. The fireworks are a separate matter: the council warns that displays may be cancelled in bad weather.

Accessibility

The route is along the flat seafront and the organiser says it is accessible for wheelchair users. There is a viewing platform for wheelchair users on the raised area by the fountains on Marine Parade. From the High Street and city centre, the way down is Pier Hill, and there are lifts to and from the seafront at the bottom of the High Street. Public toilets are along the route.

The council adds a warning of its own: the parade’s website contains flashing images and fast-moving animations that may cause discomfort for people with photosensitive epilepsy.

Road closures

The organiser says there will be road closures on Marine Parade, part of Western Esplanade and Eastern Esplanade. The council has not yet published the order. Checked on 29 September, its special events road closures page carries a single order, for the Southend 10K on 4 October (Southend-on-Sea City Council, special events road closures). Parking and getting there

The organiser’s advice is to skip the seafront: its car parks “fill up fast”, so use one of the city centre car parks and walk down, or come by public transport.

The council’s tariffs make the evening cheap if you pick the right car park (Southend-on-Sea City Council, car park pricing):

  • City centre Zone 2 car parks stop charging at 6pm. That covers Alexandra Street, Clarence Road, Tylers Avenue-York Road and Warrior Square, so arriving just before the parade costs very little. The exception is University Square, which charges until midnight, at £4.00 for up to six hours after 6pm.
  • Seafront Zone 1 car parks charge until 9pm, with an evening rate of £5.00 for up to three hours from 6pm.
  • The start point is a car park. The Eastern Esplanade car park is Zone 1B and closes at 9.15pm (car park zones). The organiser has not said whether it is open to the public on parade night, so do not count on it.

By train, c2c runs from Fenchurch Street to Southend Central and Greater Anglia from Liverpool Street to Southend Victoria, both a short walk from the seafront. Joining the parade

Anyone can take part for free, but you must register, and registration closes on 10 October 2026 (Join the Parade). Only registered entries who turn up in costume and lights are allowed in. The main rules:

  • Everyone must be illuminated and in a family-friendly Halloween costume.
  • No children under 7, and under-16s must be with an adult. Groups with vulnerable adults or children need at least one DBS-checked member.
  • Muster by 4.45pm, with a group representative at the 5pm safety briefing.
  • Vehicles: one per entry, no longer than 20ft, and able to pass under the pier at 16ft. Floats need safety rails, and powered entries must carry a fire extinguisher and first aid kit.
  • No handouts, including leaflets, and nothing thrown from vehicles. Banners are allowed.
