Southend Today is an independent site for the city. Nobody we write about pays us anything, and no story goes up unless we can say precisely where it came from.
From Leigh to Shoeburyness
The city runs a long way along the estuary and we try to cover the length of it: Leigh on Sea and Chalkwell, Westcliff, the town centre and Prittlewell, Southchurch and Thorpe Bay, Eastwood inland, and Shoeburyness at the far end. The seafront gets all the attention, and the decisions that change daily life are usually taken a good way behind it.
Everything sourced
What we publish is drawn from records anyone may inspect and few people have the hours for: the city planning register and the papers behind it, budget documents, hygiene ratings from council inspections, crime data published at police.uk, statutory notices in The Gazette. The monitoring is automated, and so is the first draft of a routine item. The facts are not automated, and each one carries the link that proves it. Our practical pages are set against what the council publishes, with the date we last looked.
