GCSE results land on Thursday 20 August. Westcliff Boys opens at 8am, Southend Boys 8.30am, Southend Girls 9am, and the sixth form entry bars are published.
GCSE results are issued on Thursday 20 August 2026. The date is set nationally, and Ofqual lists it in its own summary of the summer series alongside 13 August for A levels (Qualification results in England: summer 2026).
Three Southend schools have published their arrangements on their own websites. The times differ by more than an hour, so check the right one before setting off.
What time each school opens
- Westcliff High School for Boys: results from the Sixth Form Building from 8.00am. Students then go to the Forum to complete the enrolment form on Applicaa and confirm subject choices. Anyone with a query should come to the Sixth Form Building from 10.00am (WHSB).
- Southend High School for Boys: results from the Main School Hall from 8.30am. External students holding a conditional offer go to the Sixth Form Centre between 9.00am and 1.00pm. Those offers are held until 1.00pm that day (SHSB sixth form admissions).
- Southend High School for Girls: results from the school canteen from 9.00am, then the Sports Hall to enrol. External offer holders arrive at main reception between 9.30am and midday (SHSG).
If you have not got a sixth form place
All three schools will hear from students who do not hold an offer, but by different routes. Westcliff High School for Boys asks non-offer holders to apply through Applicaa with their achieved results, and says it aims to reply within 24 hours. Southend High School for Boys opens for remaining places between 11.00am and 1.00pm, and says plainly that places are “not allocated on a first-come, first-served basis”. Southend High School for Girls runs a waiting list from 9.30am to midday, in person only, with results slips and photo ID. It will not add anyone by email or phone, and repeats the process daily to 26 August.
The published entry bars are worth reading before you queue:
| School | Points needed | English and maths | Other |
|---|---|---|---|
| Southend High School for Boys | 52 from best 8 GCSEs, grades below 6 not counted | Grade 5 in both | Grade 7 for A level maths, biology, chemistry, physics |
| Westcliff High School for Boys | 52 from best 8 GCSEs | Grade 5 in both | Subject requirements apply in some cases |
| Southend High School for Girls | 50 from best 8 GCSEs, counting grade 5 and above | Grade 5 in both | At least two GCSEs at grade 7 or above |
The cut-off dates are not the same either. Southend High School for Boys gives Monday 14 September 2026 as its final date of admission to the sixth form. Southend High School for Girls gives Wednesday 30 September 2026.
South Essex Colleges Group, which teaches A levels and vocational courses at its Southend campuses, confirms it is releasing GCSE and level 1 and 2 results on the same day, 20 August, and asks students with queries to contact their department first (South Essex Colleges Group, exams and results).
If you want to talk to somebody independent of any school, the National Careers Service takes calls on 0800 100 900, from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 5pm on Saturday (National Careers Service).
Think a grade is wrong
A review of marking is not a re-mark. Reviewers check whether the mark scheme was applied correctly and whether there was an administrative error. They do not mark the paper again.
Three things families get wrong every year:
- The request goes through the school’s exams officer, not the student or parent. The school needs your written consent first.
- There is no grade protection. A mark can go down as well as up, and you must be told that before you agree.
- The deadline for GCSE reviews of results and for access to scripts is 24 September 2026. The faster priority service closing on 20 August applies only to A levels, T Levels and level 3 vocational qualifications.

Resits are in November, results in January
Anyone who needs to sit GCSE English language or maths again does not wait until next summer. AQA’s confirmed November 2026 timetable puts the papers in the first two weeks of the month:
- Tuesday 3 November: English Language Paper 1
- Wednesday 4 November: Mathematics Paper 1, non-calculator
- Thursday 5 November: English Language Paper 2
- Friday 6 November: Mathematics Paper 2, calculator
- Monday 9 November: Mathematics Paper 3, calculator
Results from that series reach students on Thursday 14 January 2027. The November series is limited to students aged 16 or over on 31 August 2026 (AQA November 2026 exam timetable).
What it means for you
If you are collecting results on Thursday, the practical points are the opening time at your own school, photo ID if you are applying anywhere as an external student, and your results slip itself, which the waiting lists ask to see.
Two schools will be busy on the same roads at the same hour. Prittlewell Chase and Southchurch Boulevard both take heavy morning traffic, so if you are driving, check what is closed this week first.
The national picture lands separately. Ofqual publishes the England-wide GCSE outcomes at 9.30am on results day, in the same statistical release that carried the A level figures on 13 August. We will report what it shows for the East of England once it is out.
