Southend’s Christmas lights go on at 6pm on Saturday 14 November 2026, in Victoria Circus. The day’s programme was published on 29 September by Visit Southend, the council’s tourism site: Christmas market stalls open at 9am, the city centre fills with markets, crafts, entertainment and music from 12pm, the lights are switched on at 6pm, and a seafront fireworks finale follows at 7.30pm (Visit Southend, Christmas lights switch-on).

Updated 29 September: the running order, the 6pm switch-on time and the 7.30pm fireworks finale are now published. Until today the only 2026 detail anywhere was the date.

The event is run by Southend City BID under its Christmas in the City banner, with Southend Theatres as headline sponsor. It is free. The BID’s own page still carries only the date and “More details to be announced soon” (Southend City BID).

Visit Southend describes a festive market, community performances, roaming entertainment and activities for all ages, with performances from local schools, choirs, theatre groups, musicians and community organisations. It has not named who will switch the lights on or which acts will play. The BID points people to @ChristmasSouthend on Facebook and Instagram for updates.

What the day looked like last year

The 2026 plan follows the same shape as 2025, which the BID wrote up in full. On Saturday 15 November 2025:

  • From 1pm, a festive artisan market ran the length of the High Street and continued inside The Victoria Centre, with live entertainment.
  • Music through the afternoon on a stage at Victoria Circus, with busking spots under the railway bridge and in The Victoria Centre. Performers included Southend Brass Band, The Starlight Majorettes Leigh-on-Sea and the Little Theatre Company, and a Rock Choir singalong built up to the main moment.
  • 6pm, the switch-on, performed by the Worshipful Mayor, Cllr Nigel Folkard, joined by cast members from the Southend Theatres Christmas shows.
  • 7.30pm, a fireworks finale on the seafront.

Extras in 2025 included a storytelling bus at the south end of the High Street, children’s rides, walkabout entertainers, two Creation Stations for craft activities, and a new Christmas tree in Royal Square (Southend City BID, 29 September 2025; review of the day, 18 November 2025). The one change on paper for 2026 is the earlier start: stalls open at 9am rather than 1pm.

The fireworks: 7.30pm off the pier

The finale is the last of the free seafront displays. The council’s events calendar lists the season as every Saturday from 26 September to 14 November 2026 at 19:30, fired from the estuary off Southend Seafront, and warns that displays may be cancelled in bad weather (Southend-on-Sea City Council, seafront fireworks). Victoria Circus is at the top of the High Street and the seafront is at the bottom, down Pier Hill, so there is an hour and a half between the two moments to make the walk. Festive Sundays in December

In 2025 the BID followed the switch-on with Festive Sundays, free family sessions running 12pm to 3pm under the railway bridge on 7, 14 and 21 December, themed around The Snow Queen, live music and a family fun day (Southend City BID, 3 December 2025). Nothing equivalent has been announced for December 2026.

Parking on switch-on day

Two council rules matter more than anything else on a November evening in the city centre, and both come from the council’s published tariff page.

  • Zone 1A prices drop to Zone 1B prices from November to January. Three hours on the central seafront falls from £8.70 to £6.60 and four hours from £11.30 to £8.60. The switch-on falls inside that window.
  • After 6pm it is a flat rate. In Zone 1A and Zone 1B, 6pm to 9pm costs £5.00 for up to three hours, so arriving for the evening rather than the afternoon is materially cheaper.

Charging hours are 8am to 9pm in Zone 1, and 8am to 6pm everywhere else, so a Zone 2 or Zone 3 car park in the city centre is free from 6pm anyway (Southend-on-Sea City Council, car park pricing charges). The city centre car parks around the High Street, including Alexandra Street, Clarence Road, Tylers Avenue-York Road and Warrior Square, are all Zone 2A. Free festive parking has not been confirmed for 2026. The council ran it in 2022, when all council-managed off-street car parks were free on Sundays from 4 to 18 December, but that offer has to be announced each year (Southend BID, 30 November 2022). One thing that is standing policy: parking is free in all council car parks on Christmas Day.

Road closures

No road closure order has been published for the switch-on. Checked on 29 September, the council’s special events road closures page lists a single order, for the Southend 10K on 4 October (Southend-on-Sea City Council). Orders are usually published close to the date, so it is worth checking again in late October. Check our Southend roadworks and travel page for what else is disrupted that week.

Light Up Leigh: date not yet published

Leigh-on-Sea holds its own switch-on, Light Up Leigh, across Leigh Library Gardens, Leigh Community Centre and central Leigh, with bell ringing at St Clement’s Church, choirs at the Christmas tree and children’s activities at the community centre.

The town council’s event page still shows the 2025 date of 28 November and the 2025 running order (4.30pm children’s activities, 6pm bell ringing, 6.10pm choir, 7pm live entertainment with mince pies and mulled wine) (Leigh-on-Sea Town Council). Do not read that as this year’s date. The 2026 date has not been published, and the children’s activities needed booking last year.
